The Biodynamic Phase curriculum offers Osteopaths a detailed program designed to explore Osteopathic thinking & training based on the traditional Osteopathic teachings of Doctors Still, Sutherland, Becker, Wales, Day, Fulford and many more who handed a lineage of knowledge & learning to Doctor Jealous.

Richard teaches the Phase courses and a Foundations course in the methodology which explores Jim’s transition from the biomechanical model of Osteopathy in the Cranial Field to the Biodynamic. Richard is a member of the International Biodynamic Osteopathy Faculty teaching the work of Doctor Jealous and is a guest lecturer at Biobasics UK.

Bio:

Richard Metliss BA (Hons) BSc (Hons) Ost DO

Richard graduated from the European School of Osteopathy 2005, clinical degree in Osteopathy BSc (Hons) Ost & DO and has a BA in History & Philosophy, Kingston University 1994. He is a certified Wu-Style Tai Chi Chuan teacher and member of the International Federation of Wu Style Family Tai Chi Chuan, certified 2016.

Richard married into an Osteopathic family, his in laws are Doctor Jealous’s early students and friends, Richard & Susan Allen DO. They became mentors and have assisted Richard in his Osteopathic journey for over 20 years. Doctor Jealous was Richard’s teacher for 12 years and Christian Sullivan DO, is Richards teaching mentor. Doctor Jealous invited Richard to join the faculty & teach the biodynamic phase program in 2020.

Courses:

The Biodynamic Osteopathic curriculum assists the Osteopath in their innate ability to observe, perceive and be free to shift through perceptual states as our relationship with Primary Respiration grows. These courses have been designed by Doctor Jealous & close associates over a period of forty years and are a direct lineage to his teachers & mentors reaching back to Doctor Still.

Foundations course

The Foundation course is an introduction to the phase curriculum which revisits the earlier work of Dr. Jealous and his transition from the mechanical model of cranial osteopathy to the biodynamic approach.

This course was created from my feeling that certain foundational skills could be introduced before the main body of Phase I. This idea was then developed with Dr. Jealous and Dr. Yesensky in the US and became a viable course with considerable help, advice & planning from Christian Sullivan DO.

The course looks at Dr. Jealous’s journey from the biomechanical model of Osteopathy in the Cranial Field to the Biodynamic model, a process guided by his teachers, especially Rubie Day DO, Rollin Becker DO and Anne Wales DO.

Course Content & themes:

  • Synchronising with the patient & afferent palpation/sensing
  • The nature of the observer, our observer and looking at where we are observing from.
  • Periosteum of the bone, sensing the bones envelope.
  • The embryological origin of bone & periosteum.
  • Motion permitted, the functional motion testing of Dr. Jealous.
  • BMT, its origins from BLT thinking and BMT models development by Dr. Jealous
  • The Three Circles, Dr. Jealous map of the Biodynamic model.
  • Rebalancing, its development by Dr. Sutherland and his study group. Why it
was needed and how it manages treatment side effects.
  • Introducing Motion Present & Neutral, key motifs of Phase 1.
  • Introduction to Biodynamic Embryology & the importance of Dr. Blechschmidt’s work and its place in the development of Biodynamic Osteopathy.

Phase I:

An introduction to a biodynamic model of O.C.F. Motion Present, Neutral, BMT and balanced fluid tension.

21-24 September 2025, Group C

Phase II:

An in-depth perception of fluid dynamics at 2-3CPM. Rates. CV4-EV4 techniques. Automatic shifting

11-14 May 2025, Group B

Phase III:

Dural development up to full adult. Intramembranous shearing. Work with the long tide. The anterior dural girdle and its clinical significance. Tempo and humility.

16-19 March 2025, Group A

Phase IV:

The midline as a therapeutic force. The reciprocal tension of the potency. The ignition.

Phase V:

The embryological development of the face. Evaluation and treatment of the face and cranium through embryological fluid segments.

Phase VI:

Treatment of the extremities using Sutherland’s power points. (Dr. Ruby Day’s explanation of W.G. Sutherland’s use of potency inside bones.)

Phase VII:

Finding the Health. Feeling the physical presence and substance of the perfect form.

Biodynamic Osteopathy Dr. Jealous:

The Center for Traditional Osteopathy is dedicated to serving the Osteopathic Community. We are committed to preserving and fostering the Osteopathic Principles through education, mentorship and respect for the Soul of Osteopathy in the heritage of James Jealous, DO.

Biodynamic Embryology lecture series by Dr. Brian Freeman:

This series of lectures organised and produced by Christian Sullivan DO are a tremendous gift to the profession. Doctor Freeman has a poetic understanding of embryology and has translated the work of Dr. Blechschmidt in his seminal book, the Ontogenetic Basis of Human Anatomy, A Biodynamic Approach to Development from Conception to Birth.

WuStyle Tai Chi Chuan

Traditional Osteopathy has many elements that are based in the Taoist understanding of movement and stillness. The practice of Taiji has considerable, powerful benefits and can assist our deeper understanding of osteopathic principles and our own Health.
